Peru Earthquake Disaster Relief - SOS Children’s Villages Responds

August 30, 2007

Peru was hit hard on August 15, by an earthquake whose magnitude was 8.0 on the Richter Scale. Since then, there have been nearly 20 aftershocks, ranging in magnitude from 4.5 to 6.3.

SOS Children’s Villages was quick to respond, and has staff in the areas. Two relief programs have been set up in the Las Palmeras neighborhood of Pisco, and in the Sunampe neighborhood in Chincha. Between the two, SOS Children’s Villages staff is providing food, support, and other daily necessities to thousands of families and children.

SOS Children’s Villages Support Peru Earthquake Victims

Specifically, SOS is handing out blankets and food in Las Palmeras to affected families, and the program in Sunampe is giving out daily meals to 250 children and working to organize families in the making of communal casserole meals.

And the support of affected children and famillies doesn’t stop there! SOS is expanding their reach by providing emergency relief in Guadalupe, where 500 children are in need of assistance.

SOS Children’s Villages doesn’t just arrive in these locations when disaster strikes, either. There are already 8 villages in Peru, which includes SOS kindergartens, social centers, youth facilities, and a vocational training center!
