Resilient Villages - SOS Children’s Village in Mogadishu
August 27, 2007
Though I am old enough to remember the early 1990’s when Somalia was in the news on a daily basis, I did not remember that the largest city in Somalia is Mogadishu.
Since becoming a supporter of SOS Children’s Village, I have come to be concerned about the area, and each time news comes through about fighting in that area, I am comforted that the SOS mothers and staff continue to do their best in the face of adversity.
Back in March 2007, amidst unrest, I learned that the SOS Hospital, with its surgical facilities, was open to treat any injuries, and that the kindergarten and other projects continued to function while the children were kept inside. The hospital, school, kindergarten, and village have all operated normally with minimal interruption since then.
Even with Somali government troops just 300 meters away as of a couple of weeks ago, Ahmed Ibrahim, the Director of SOS Children’s Villages Somalia, who is in close contact with authorities in the region has not chosen to close the village. I am confident that SOS is doing what is best for its children and staff in this volatile region, and I’m looking forward to hearing how people support SOS Children’s Villages in Mogadishu and worldwide during World Orphan Week.
