SOS Children’s Villages seeks to aid AIDS orphans in Africa
August 17, 2007
“The scale of the AIDS pandemic is shocking. It is unimaginable. That is precisely why we owe it to each and every one of the million AIDS orphans to help them with all our strength where we can. We must not close our eyes to this misery,” stated the president of SOS Children’s Villages Helmut Kutin.
With the numbers of aids orphans’ staggering to 15 million across the world, SOS children’s villages is left with the challenge of caring for children whom have lost one or even both parents. Not only does the challenge stop at the loss of parents, but theses children also have been living with lack of nutrition, education, and care. And in some cases have been driven to be the heads of the house hold, and provide for their siblings and remaining relatives. These orphaned children are vulnerable and leave many who care for them worried about their future. Ms Gombakomba a teacher to AIDS orphans at Hermann Gmeiner school in Zimbabwe, speaks of her worry, “It’s a dreadful situation. Children are being forced to take on the roles of adults at a very early age. They have shocking backgrounds that make your heart weep. Where will it end? In a world full of little adults?”
As the spread of AIDS continues and with it social poverty raises, organizations such as SOS children’s Villages shall remain fighting “one of the greatest challenges facing humanity.” As SOS children’s villages aims to provide a loving and caring family model for AIDS orphans throughout the world, their mission is love driven and aims to insure the security, and stability of the new SOS homes that are being provided for these children. And as SOS programs continue to provide HIV/AIDS advice, free tests and antiretroviral therapy; the gear those programs to aid females and children whom in the fight against HIV/AIDS have been affected the worst.

With the majority of AIDS orphans living in the Southern Sahara, SOS children’s Villages and partnering organizations together care for 40,000 children throughout their 60 social and medical centers.”Our concept involves making every effort to secure the lives of children and families with HIV/AIDS. We want to work with the respective village communities to create safety networks for children and families, which also receive considerable support from and are managed by the people in the communities themselves”, said President Kutin
As Africa continues to be the heart of the AIDS epidemic, and the southern Sahara alone housing 26 million AIDS victims, SOS Children’s Village’s will continue to fight with joint effort of other counties, governments, communities and organizations to bring an end to this scarring epidemic. It is only after the epidemic and the social issues it causes are tackled can there be hope for the generation of orphaned children today.
